Splendours of Uzbekistan’s Oases: Caravan Roads through Central Asia

In this lecture, Rocco Rante, will walk us through “The Splendours of Uzbekistan Oases” exhibition at the Louvre Museum (23 November 2022 to 6 March 2023), which highlighted the culture of a vast area of Central Asia from antiquity to the medieval Islamic period. Themes include the difference between nomadic and sedentary lifestyles, and the cultural exchanges between Iranian, Hellenistic, Greco-Bactrian, Turkic, Chinese, Indian, Mongolian and other civilizations and groups. Dr Rante will contextualise the objects within the Uzbek, French, and Russian archaeological expeditions that unearthed the objects, and take us behind the scenes of organising such an exhibition.
