Study day co-organized by Laeiq Ahmadi (LabEx PasP/MSH Mondes) and Olivier Bordeaux (CNRS-ArScAn) .
Afghanistan, a true crossroads between East and West, has always been a space for the exchange and circulation of knowledge, artistic traditions, and cultural innovations. The universal value of this heritage is evident through more than a century of archaeological excavations carried out across the territory, both by the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan (DAFA) and by French archaeological missions abroad. These studies have produced a considerable body of documents, maps, photographs, and scientific reports that bear witness to the country’s cultural and civilizational history. However, contemporary history in Afghanistan has been marked by severe political instability – from the Soviet invasion to civil wars, up to the latest takeover by the Taliban regime in 2021. These upheavals have repeatedly put archaeological sites at risk and still threaten the integrity of an exceptional heritage today. Faced with these risks, preserving and enhancing scientific archives becomes essential to safeguarding archaeological memory and passing on knowledge.
