Philippe Marquis is the Director the French Archeological Delegation in Afghanistan (DAFA) which was created in 1922 and has been working with Afghan archaeologists since.
Philippe Marquis started his work in Afghanistan in 2004 under the direction of Roland Besenval (1947-2014) and was involved in excavations in northern Afghanistan.
M. Marquis was educated in Paris as an urban archaeologist and was previously involved in archaeological projects in Pakistan, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman.
He was director of DAFA (2009-14), then curator in the department of Oriental Antiquities at the Louvre Museum (2014-17). In 2018, he was again appointed director of DAFA, and he resides in Kabul.
